Pancreatic cancer is a silent and deadly disease that often goes undetected until it’s too late. As a Chiropractor, I believe in promoting overall health and well-being, and raising awareness about pancreatic cancer is a cause close to my heart. In honor of National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month, let’s explore why understanding the early warning signs is crucial and how Chiropractic care can play a role in recognising potential symptoms.
Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to detect early, earning it the label of a “death sentence” in many cases due to its challenging treatment outcomes. Unlike other cancers, it often grows silently without noticeable symptoms until it has progressed significantly. This highlights the importance of early detection for effective treatment.
My interest in discussing pancreatic cancer is not only professional but also deeply personal.
In 2022, I lost my father to this devastating disease, making it an even more urgent topic for me. His diagnosis was late, leaving little time for treatment options. My experience has fueled my determination to raise awareness about early warning signs so that others may have a chance at timely intervention.
The pancreas, a pear-shaped organ located behind the stomach, plays a vital role in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels by producing insulin and other hormones. It also produces pancreatic juices that aid in digestion.
Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths, accounting for 5.2 percent of all cancer-related deaths in the UK. Those over 55 are at higher risk, and other factors include a family history of cancer, obesity, smoking, diabetes, and a diet high in red and processed meats.
Recognising the early warning signs of pancreatic cancer is essential for timely intervention.
Some key symptoms to be aware of include:
Upper Abdominal Pain or Discomfort
Pain in the abdominal area, especially above the belly button and below the breast area, may be associated with pancreatic cancer. Consult your GP if this is new and combined with other symptoms.
Mid-Back Pain or Discomfort
Pancreatic cancer can manifest as pain in the mid-back region, often eased by leaning forward. If you experience this, particularly with other symptoms, seek medical advice.
Jaundice
Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, along with itching, may indicate a blocked bile duct due to pancreatic cancer. Seek urgent medical advice if jaundice is present.
Change in Bowel Habit
Unexplained changes in bowel movements, such as pale, smelly stools that don’t flush easily, can be a sign of pancreatic cancer.
Indigestion Not Responding to Medication
Persistent indigestion despite treatment may be a cause for concern, especially when combined with other symptoms.
Loss of Appetite and Unexplained Weight Loss
A sudden loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss can be alarming and warrant further investigation.
Nausea and Vomiting
Pancreatic tumors can cause nausea and vomiting, particularly after eating.
New-Onset Diabetes
A recent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes unrelated to lifestyle factors or weight gain may need further investigation.
Fatigue
Experiencing extreme tiredness and fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest may be a sign of an underlying issue.
As a Chiropractor, my focus is on musculoskeletal health, particularly back pain. Mid-back pain is one of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer, making it crucial to consult an experienced Chiropractor to identify the true cause of your pain. Additionally, Chiropractors are committed to promoting overall well-being and can play a role in raising awareness about pancreatic cancer’s early warning signs.
Pancreatic cancer’s early detection is vital for improved treatment outcomes. By understanding the early warning signs, we can take proactive steps to seek medical advice promptly. As a Chiropractor, I am dedicated to promoting awareness about this disease, hoping that together, we can make a difference in the fight against pancreatic cancer. If you notice any of these symptoms or have concerns, don’t hesitate to consult your GP for timely evaluation and peace of mind. Together, we can raise awareness and potentially save lives.
